Johnny ADAMS - Sings Doc Pomus, The Real Me 1991

Johnny ADAMS - Sings Doc Pomus, The Real Me 1991

Another composer tribute from New Orleans soul legend Adams (his previous album was devoted to the songs of Percy Mayfield), and a typically classy piece of work. Produced by longtime collaborator Dr. John, THE REAL ME finds the nonpareil vocalist interpreting mostly unfamiliar songs by Doc Pomus, the New York City writer who crafted scores of hit songs for the likes of Elvis Presley, Dion, the Coasters, and Bobby Darin. The basic sound here is gospel and blues (Pomus' first love), and Adams does full justice to Pomus's frequently depressing tales of romance gone bad; in fact, if you can listen to the almost unbelievably depressing "Still in Love," which Adams sings with astonishing gravity, without getting a little misty eyed, you probably need to have your meds adjusted.
